Petralona

The Petralona cave is located at an altitude of 250 m. of mount Katsika, at a distance of 800 m. from the village of Petralona.

It was first explored in 1959 and became world famous in 1960, when a 700.000 year-old human skull was discovered. Since then, many Greek and foreign scientists have been studying its findings. The total length of the corridors is 1.500 m. and the area covered by the cave is 10.400 sq. m. Many findings are kept at Petralona museum, which has been built nearby.
